Born in San Francisco, Julia Morgan (1872-1957) grew up in Oakland in a spacious Victorian house. Gifted in mathematics and encouraged in her studies by her mother, Morgan was influenced to become an architect by her mother's cousin, Pierre Le Brun, who designed an early skyscraper, the Metropolitan Life Insurance Tower in Manhattan. The Ebell Club of Los Angeles was formed in 1894 by a group of women wishing to take up the work of Adrian Ebell. The club is dedicated to expanding women's education in the arts, sciences and literature and the advancement of women in these branches of study and all areas of culture.
